These grants are available through the Academic Competitiveness Grants and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grants, as announced by the US Secretary of Education.

What is a Scholarship Grant? 

A scholarship grant is given to individuals who excel in their studies but do not have the financial resources to continue or further their education.

What are the different types of scholarship grants?

There are many different types of scholarship grants available. Most common are the following:

Merit-based scholarship grant – the recipients are chosen according to their athletic, academic, and artistic abilities.

Need-based scholarship grant – this type of grant provides scholarships to distinguished students needing financial help to pursue their studies. This can cover all or just part of the tuition and may also include living allowances.

Full-ride scholarship grant – this is the most sought-after type of scholarship grant as it covers all tuition, fees and housing. This may or may not include books stipend.

Ethnicity-based scholarship grant – applicants for this must belong to a certain race, religion, or ethnic group.

There are also scholarship grants that require bonds. Recipients are required to work for an employer or in a rural or remote area for a given period. Failure to comply can cause recipients to repay the value of the grant given.

What is a literacy grant?

Literacy grant is a grant program that enables the less-privileged individuals to attain basic knowledge on reading and writing.  Beneficiaries of this grant usually include out-of-school-youth, children of poor families, the elderly, mountain settlers, and other types of minority groups.  Worldwide, there are many agencies that provide literacy grants.
