I want to start my own business.  Can I apply for grants to fund this?

It depends.  Grants are awarded to projects that benefit the community and not just individuals.  If your aim is to start a business and provide good service for a community, you may have a chance for a grant.  Likewise, if your business will offer trainings to women and minorities you might have a chance.  What is crucial is finding the grant making agency whose objectives match that of your business.

Otherwise, your best option is to apply for a loan through the Small Business Administration (SBA) whose aim is to assist small businesses through its various loan programs.

I have read somewhere that I can get grants for my personal use. Is this true?

No. There is no such thing as grants awarded for personal use.  Individual or organizational grants are given to fund programs or projects that will benefit the majority or the general public.

Can I apply for grants to fund my education?

Yes.  There are many different government and private foundations that support programs to further educate the whole of America.  This includes providing funding for research and students’ pursuit of higher education.
One good site to check is www.fafsa.ed.gov.

I don’t have money to pay for my debts.  Can I apply for grants to pay for these?

No.  As mentioned earlier, grants are more for programs/projects that will benefit a community or the public in general.  Debts are personal issues and definitely not the concern of grant making agencies.
